Have Indian's arrived internationally?

A nation of one billion people. Still it took us 60 long years to win an Olympic gold. Are Indian's not interested in sport? That can't be the case. We know very well how crazy we act when there is a cricket match going on. And we know how many kids have broken our window glasses when playing in the galli. So is cricket the only game we Indians can play? Again the answer is no. Sania Mirza is a big star. Every other girl who can hold a racket wants to be like her. Then why is it that we have to wait for years and years to win a medal at the Olympic or any world championships? A big contingent goes to these tournaments. But half of the time news comes from off the field than on it. No wonder even the Chinese media put Abhinav Bindra on the front page with a headline hinting a lot of what the world thinks of us.

So finally have we arrived on the international sports arena?

I don’t think so! Abhinav Bindra’s winning was because of his own hardwork and his family’s contribution. Not everyone can afford to do what his family did.

To see more Abhinav’s we need a support system in place. We need sponsors for all the games other than cricket and tennis. We need better infrastructure. And more importantly we need politics out of sports.
